Self Portriats through History
The selfie is a smartphone-produced version of the self-portrait, which has been a staple of art and photography history since artists first began seeing examining their own images in the mirror. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist that is drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by that artist. Although self-portraits have been made since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid-15th century that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work.
A good self portrait does a little more than just capture the likeness of the artist but something a little deeper. Sometimes artist have used self portraits to tell secrets, express views and morals, or just their overall temperament. Art is not always about a pretty picture but rather a important message. what do the self portraits below reveal about their artists? |
