Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg (c. 1398 – 1468) was a German blacksmith, goldsmith, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe. His invention of mechanical movable type printing started the Printing Revolution and coincidentally the birth of the art of Typography.
Typography is the art of creating the letters. It’s designed them and creating them by design their curves and shapes.Unless you're a visual artist or graphic designer, you probably don't spend much time thinking about all the work that goes into designing text. Indeed, typography isn't simply organizing and applying letters; it's a means of communication that requires training, skill, and more than a little creativity. The shape of a letter can convey emotion and meaning. Consider Roman Type and comic sans. Comic san is silly and reads not very serious while roman is seen as professional. Why is comic san seen as silly? is it the curves and lack of straight lines.
Characteristics of Typography
Nicolas Jenson created the Roman Type, which was inspired by the text on ancient Roman buildings. It was far more readable and seen quickly. This type is what we see today as a very standard font, a baseline.
Frederic William Goudy was an American printer, artist and type designer whose typefaces include Copperplate Gothic, Goudy Old Style and Kennerley. After teaching lettering and becoming known as an advertising designer in Chicago, Goudy built his reputation as a type designer.
Max Miedinger created Helvetica, the most loved typeface of our time. This was a return to minimalism, and many other simplistic typefaces such as Futura surfaced around this time period.
Assignment one: arranging abstract lettering
look at the artwork to the left. What is the first think you see? a color, shape etc.
Continue to look, does another feature begin to emerge and look now more prominent.
Once you've looked at it for a what do you start to see. pretend you are looking at clouds and the clouds start to look like different things. List 5 different things you see in this art.?
This one is a quick project. Two to three days tops. Using your Name. 5 or more letters. Overlap the letters and arrange them to make an interesting layout. That's it. Straight forward right.
